How do i know how old a car is by looking at its reg.?

Can someone tell me how i recognise a cars age for the last 10 years. Thanks. I'm buying a car tomorrow and it'll make it a bit easier if i can tell its age easily.
 
Look at the V.I.N number on the drivers door. When you open the driver door there will be a sticker on the frame that has all that sort of info.
 
Look at the drivers side door. Open the door and look where it latches. should be some info there.
 
if it has two letters then two numbers 02 or 52 that means 2002, 03 or 53 is 2003, 04 or 54 is 2004 etc etc. any older than 2002 then repairs become very expensive on mots. i know a p reg is a 96/97, R reg is 97/98
 
For recent cars its really easy.

The reg has two numbers. The second one is the year, the first one is either a 0 or a 5. o indicates first half of the year, 5 indicates second half.

Eg AB01XYZ Car is from first half of 2001.

CD56UVW Car is from second half of 2006.
 
i think the more modern ones have the year at the start of the reg plate '00' '04' '07' etc.
