How do I keep my outdoor cat in?

My 1 and 1/2 year old male kitty goes in and out all day. Recently he has been injured (I think by another cat). My vet told me that just the presence of a male cat (even when neutered) can start fights.
I am worried and want him to be an indoor cat from now on. He cries all night to go out. What should I do?
