How do I join the military reserve as an officer after college?

honestly? you are expecting too much.. or maybe that is too little.

NO SUCH THING as part time military service any more. the Guard and Reserves have been deploying in far greater numbers and for far longer a period a of time( up to a year at time) then ever before.

and your status as a civilian pilot means..well nothing.. to the military and in fact would NOT help at all just in case you wanted to actually fly in the military as well. too many bad civilian habits to undo.

you need to speak to a recruiter.. and they can tell you what, if anything, is an option for you at your local reserve unit..

because yes you enlist for a specific unit and you can only get whatever job that unit has need of.

Heres my situation, and I really hope to get some help so thank you for any advice!

Graduated with a B.S last year, got a great job right out of college as an airline pilot (did all my training civilian at local airports) but unfortunately was recently furloughed (laid off) this May. Joining the military has always been something I've really wanted to do and had a passion for, but could never find the right time for one reason or another (girlfriend, airline job, ect) Finally this is the perfect time in my life, as im laid off and in a pool to be recalled and no girlfriend / family ties so have the perfect oppurtunity. My biggest concern though is that I only want to join the reserves so I can maintain my status with the airline to be recalled.

So after already graduating and having a degree, how do I go about joining the reserves? I have heard you can just go to a normal recruiter, you actually have to apply to the physical base?

Also which branch would you most reccomend for my situation, being I just want to serve my country. Most people tell me the air force because they say its most like a normal job and you can be in the AF reserves and have a normal job and live a mainly normal life (with the exception of being deployed) Others have told me if I join the Marines that will be my life and I will live, sleep, and breathe the corp. I am eager to serve my country and help but would like to do it on as part time basis as possible.

So in conclusion, what would be the best branch you reccomened given my cicumstances and how do I physically go about joining the reserves as an officer with no prior experience?

You are laid off- in this economy you are expecting to be called back soon?

Let me know how that works out for you...

Anyways you can go to a recruiter: have you thought about the ARMY? or the AIR national guard?

I think going active duty army would be your best option right now......paid training OCS and whatever school you go too if you are required (you can do this in the reserves too, I am just saying), but there is no job afterwards unless you can get a full time job with the reserves: which as an officer it is easier to gain a position with the reserves (national guard or reserves), but you are consider full time active guard or reserves...so I don't know how that would effect you if the airline suddenly came calling. Not to mention you are under contract therefore even if the airline came calling you would not be able to go back.

you can go to a regular recruiter let them know what you want to do: and also do your research online..so much info out there...also posting questions in the forum recruiters answer your questions.
