How do I improve my Verizon phones coverage while roaming on US Cellular towers?

I have an LG VX9200 from Verizon. Switching carriers is not an option. Does anybody know how to change the settings to improve my connection on US Cellular towers. The reception is not a problem, just connecting to their network. I am in Verizon's extended coverage area, which means I connect to a US Cellular tower, but I only connect about 25% of the time. It takes repeated tries to connect. It is in an area right on the edge of the coverage map, so I will connect to a very weak Verizon network, then switch to US Cellular tower. My battery life is cut in half and calls rarely go through the first time. The phone tries to connect to the Verizon towers so it spends a lot of time searching for signal, then it finally connects to a US Cellular tower about 400 yards behind my house, where i get several bars. Once I make a phone call it is a good signal and does not drop me. I have called Tech Support, but you know how that is.

So here is what I think is happening. My phone wants to connect to a Verizon tower, but finally looks for another tower. In this case the extended coverage tower is US Cellular, but US Cellular doesn't like for me to connect to their network. So my phone is constantly in an infinite loop, trying to figure out what to do. Is there a way to force the phone to connect to a preferred roaming tower, and then change it when I go to an area where connecting to Verizon's network will not be a problem. Any help would be great. I am an engineer, just not the right kind to solve this issue, so I would like responses from fellow engineers or technicians.
