I will be attending the New School in Manhattan in January. I will be an out of state student since I currently reside in South Carolina.

I am 21 years old and will be applying for everything as an independent person. that means I will not be including my parents tax information.

I haven't had much experience with FASFA because I only went to a community college for a semester, and I payed for that out of pocket.

How much do you think I will be able to get since I am independent? The tuition is $20,000 and it's about $16,000 for housing. Are there grants/aid for housing as well?

Any type of info i'd appreciate, I really want to get everything settled by the end of August, that way I can focus on moving there.

It may be too late to get into school this year. You have to get your FAFSA forms filled out as soon as you get your tax return info back, the earlier the better. It's worth a shot to try for it still, but I'd think of a backup plan if I were you.

Also, I believe you either have to be 24 or married to be considered independent. There are probably some other circumstances under which you could qualify as independent, but you do have to qualify, you can't just chose to not be considered a dependent anymore, even if you pay for everything on your own.

Originally my husband and I wanted to get through school before we got married, but when we saw how little financial aid we'd get when listed as dependent on our parents we went ahead and got married. Now we get about $24,000 a year in grants, plus we have the Stafford loan and both work part-time and apply for every scholarship we can get our hands on. Our financial aid pays for us to both be in school full time, covers our housing and utilities and healthcare. We cover food, transportation and any entertainment/eating out/shopping that goes on.
