How do I get the puppy to stop whining?

I just got a miniature Dachshund a few days ago. He is 9 weeks old. I know that some will think it's too early to be getting upset, but he just drives me crazy. I have barely had any sleep (I work nights) so it makes it 10 times worse, especially when i struggle to stay up all night and catch myself falling asleep while I drive. He will not stop whining every single time I walk away and he can't see me anymore, whether it's putting him in the crate or just going upstairs and leaving him behind. Whenever he does stay in the crate, he will not stop whining, period. The only time he does is if he gets so tired he falls asleep, but then he's right back to doing it again once he wakes up. I've tried leaving toys in the crate, leaving a clock, putting a blanket over it, etc but nothing is working so far. Also, for some reason he will not do anything once I let him out of the crate. He does not even try to explore the surroundings. He just follows me around, never more than two feet away to the point where I trip over him every few minutes. When I sit down, he will just lay down by my feet and fall asleep. He completely ignores his toys and never even tries to play, unless it's to jump up at me in an attempt to get my attention if I don't pay any attention to him for a few minutes. Maybe it's just me, but I think there's something wrong with that. I've never seen a puppy that doesn't love to play and explore when they are given the opportunity. Any advice/suggestions would help at this point!!
Thanks for the replies so far. As for the "Dude" answer, grow up. I'm asking an honest question here, no need to come back at me with all that attitude.
