How do I get the highest quality out of stereo mix?

I want to record some windows sounds and I was wondering how I could get the best quality recording with them. I use Audacity Beta, which already comes with stereo mix, but I have tried numerous times to record high quality sounds with it, and it just doesn't sound right. If there are any other programs that can do this better, let me know...but I don't want to spend too much money on something like this. So, if it is possible, how can I get a high quality stereo mix recording?

Audacity is easily up to the job.

You should select Stereo, 16Bit, 44KHz or 48Khz.

That's all there is to it. That's as high as it gets. 44Khz is equivalent to CD quality audio. 48Khz is equivalent to BluRay quality Audio.

Try recording at 48 or 96 kHz. If it still sounds odd, make sure there are no devices nearby that are interfering with the audio, such as wireless devices, motors, etc. They tend to make buzzing noises in other devices.

Additionally, try using a splitter and/or a male-male 3.5mm audio jack cable to connect the microphone input to the speaker output. This can increase the quality of the recording.
