i wrapped the chain around the largest front sprocket and the largest rear sprocket (with the derailer swung out of the way) and marked the chain at the first possible link to get the chain to fit around the sprokets. what i'm wondering is if thats too tight for the derailer to work properly. do i need to lengthen it any more links or is that good enough? it's an 18 speed trek and the chain is 1/2 inch pitch. thanks in advance.

this is a pretty good way to use. since you dont really use the 2 large or even the 2 small when actually riding, it works well. however, it is a little short for those who don't use their gears correctly. add a few links as you can always take them out later. be sure to use the correct pin for this.
