How do I get rid of the roots in my garden?

I am starting a garden and I was in the middle of turning the soil and cleaning up a nice space for it, when i started running into tons of roots. I dont want to pick a new place for my garden because this place is absolutely perfect (except for the roots). I had a garden here before and it came out wonderful.

How do I get rid of them? They're all over the place.

You will never find a place that doesn't contain roots. Roots are not necessarily a bad thing. Yes, some can be of "bad" types of weeds, ie horsenettle or crabgrass, but roots also help break up hard soil, creating pathways for water and air. So, you really can't get rid of them, just hope they aren't roots of the bad types of weeds.
