How do I get past the steering lock on a 1986 Jeep Cherokee Laredo without breaking...

...anything? My dad just got me a 1986 Jeep Cherokee Laredo from an auction for around $170. Originally he bought it to haul off as scrap metal, but we (I) decided to fix it. Before any fixing (or lack thereof) can occur, it needs to get home. Dad knows how to get the engine to fire up by running a wire from the battery to the coil and touching another wire from the battery to the solenoid to make it start. Actually, after watching him, if I could get that battery charged, I could probably do it myself, assuming it runs. But one problem is that we don't have the key, and so we can't get past the steering lock. I know how to make it work, but Dad doesn't wanna break it. So how do I do this the right way? If all else fails, we can haul it home, but we still need to steer it.

Btw- if there is no way to do this without breaking it, is there any way to ONLY break the steering lock, and nothing else? I'd prefer to not break anything, but if we have to, the less the better.
