I've been on lexapro for a good 2 months now. First started on 5 mg, but the doctor said thats not gonna do much for your weight. So then I was on 10 mg for a couple of weeks, but my mom put me back to 5 mg because she thinks I'm slacking off in school. I'm only taking 5 mg right now and I rarely feel anxious anymore. I don't think I need to be taking medicine anymore. The main reason I was taking lexapro was to get back on my feet. I really want to stop taking Lexapro but understand that your not supposed to stop cold turkey. Does anyone know what I should do?

Hi

I happen to take Lexapro also. While we do not become addicted to it, we do become dependent on it. In my opinion, it is best to taper slowly... and under a doctor's care. See your doctor, tell him your desire and work out a plan with him that allows the brain to start producing what it neeRAB naturally as you slowly come off the Lexapro.

Just FYI... I take the Lexapro because my receptors need it in my brain. Have you considered that maybe this could be true for you also? Perhaps you are feeling "back on your feet" because you brain chemisty neeRAB the help?

Whatever decision that is made, please, please make it with a qualified doctor's assisstance.... that's a doctor's purpose in our lives.

Wishing you well

I have been on lexapro in the past. IF you are going to come off of it you definitely want to taper off... stopping cold turkey isn't going to cause pain, etc but the one time I did it gave me jitters and I was VERY anxious, etc.

Along with the other reply, I would question whether you really need to come off the med or not. This is not a medicine that you take to "cure" you. It's not like you take it for 2 months, you feel better so you can go off it. I've had 3 different perioRAB of bad depression over the past several years (brought on death of mother, bad concussion, death of close friend) and each time I took lexapro for several months. Once I was past the bad times, I worked with my doctor to taper off. The first time I took it I quit cold turkey after 3 months thinking I was fine... the depression came back with a vengeance and I got back on it for a while. From what my doctor has said and papers, etc I have read, it's best to take it for several months(6+) before trying to come off and facing life again without it's help.
