How do I get my VCR from my combo VCR/DVD player to muy 'puter & onto YouTube?

I have some old VHS tapes. I've transferred some of them onto DVDs. Then I try to use "muvee" and a couple other video editors but it will not accept the file extensions that were given to the DVD when it was made.
I called a company to do it for me and they want a hundred dollars!!? Surely there is a simple way to do it...
HELP!?!
