how do I get my Hotmail outgoing mail (outgoing server settings) to work?!

I have a Droid Eris and am very frustrated! Can't get hotmail to "send" any emails from my phone. I can get incoming emails, but can never send outgoing.
Okay, so I've double checked the settings....smtp.live.com, TLS, 25. I've changed it to SSL and used different server port numbers that i can find. Still no luck with my hotmail. Any suggestions???

Go into the Email app, then into your hotmail account. Menu -> Account Settings -> Outgoing Settings. On that page you should see:

SMTP server: smtp.live.com
Port: 25
Security type: SSL
Require sign-in. (this is the thing you want to make sure is on)
Username: [email protected] (or whatever your address is)
Password: whatever your password is.

If those settings don't work, try 587 for the port and TLS for the security. Either way, it must be set to sign in.

Also remember that this doesn't work for all hotmail accounts, and is only guaranteed to work for paid hotmail plus accounts. However, it works for me and I have a free account.

Okay I did that and I see the sign in part but it is already checked. I tried to proceed and I still get the warning: Cannot connect to the mail server to verify your account information. Your server is not responding.
But it's been doing this for weeks. So I know it's just not responding at the moment.

A Hotmail Plus account is a paid account on Hotmail.

Rumour has it that this is the only type of account that will always support SMTP.

What is odd though is my normal hotmail account works fine.

There is also an option somewhere that says something like "Requires SSL". It should be set to "Always".

I didn't realize it until a week or so ago, but I started having the same problem. Today I had enough of it, so I followed the advice about changing the port number, unchecked the "Use secure connection" box, and my e-mail went through just fine.

Thanks everybody for your help!
