how do I get increased internet feed for my smart phone from a wireless router?

My roomates are always hogging the internet on their PCs. I'll unplug the router for a few seconds to try to disconnect their internet connection, and then connect with my smartphone, but it often doesnt work, and I wont even be able to browse the internet at all.
