How do I get images ONTO my T3?

For the life of me I can't figure out how to get images/photos from my PC onto my Tungsten T3. If I try to "install" an image onto my TT3 the only destination option is an SD card, which I don't have :( I've read a couple reviews of the TT3 and they say that you can get images onto both the SD and internal Flash memory. And this is taken directly from the TT3 user manual... "Drag photos onto the Palm Quick Install icon or the Palm Photos desktop window to install them on your handheld or on an expansion card during the next HotSync operation."

But images I copy into the media section of Palm Desktop (v.6.2) don't appear on my TT3. And like I mentioned early, if I drag them into the Quick install, my only destination option is an SD card. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can do?

An SD card would only cost you about a buck. A USB SD card reader probably less than $10. The issue you have is that PalmOS doesn't know what to do with any files except prc and pdb. There was some aftermarket software (splash photo I think) that would take jpg and other images on your computer and turn them into pdb files that could be viewed by the splash photo app on your T3. I suggest you look for third party photo viewing software or invest in an SD card. BTW, it's been a long time and I can't seem to recall whether even with an SD card, you still might need photo software on the T3.

hope this helps...

It actually does help, thanks r0k. Is there a SD storage size limitation for the T3 that you're aware of? If I'm going to get an SD card for pretty cheap I might as well make the most of it; no sense in getting a 512mb if the T3 will support 16gb instead. But likewise no sense in getting 16gb if it will only recognize the first 4gb :)

I don't remember the last time I tried to hotsync photos to a Palm. As r0k says, you're much better off just copying them to a cheap SD card. However, the Palm Desktop should convert the photos from .jpg to .pdb format, I believe. If so, it might take a long time, and the photos would only be viewable in the Palm photo viewer. Your .jpg photos copied to an SD card should be much better. A great free .jpg viewer is GrxView Lite. See the link in my signature line.

This is what I was hoping for, although after trying it, it seems that images in the Media section of the Palm Desktop aren't converted and thus not sync onto the T3. While I'll probably get an SD and look into alternative image viewing software (like the one you suggested), ideally I had hoped to do as much "out of the box" as possible.

I seem to remember a very small limitation, possibly 1 Gig for devices of the T3 vintage. When I had a T3, my largest SD card was 256MB.

Sadly, during the Tungsten era there were some features Palm omitted that are included "out of the box" today. I wouldn't expect to do even the basics on your T3 without some third party software.

toastysquirrel: 1gig is the limit for read write but it will read up to a 2gig. If you go to palm powerups there is a free app called t3 big cards that will allow read write on all 2gig cards and some 4gig cards. You may need the fat 32 file at this site also. You can google about it. There is a discussion at 1src forums on it. GRX View lite is free and will read many types of photos also.

Thanks guys, I'm going to look into these suggestions, although I'll probably just stick with a 1gb SD card when I get around to it. But this begs the question - and forgive me for deviating from the OP - how does a T5 compare to the T3 in terms of accessing images or even audio files? Does the T5 also require an SD card or is it more "out-of-the-box" friendly compared to the T3?

I just got my T3 off of Ebay and I think I could probably pretty inexpensively upgrade myself to a T5 if the usability is better than the T3 (or a TX, but those seem to be much more $$$).

Any thoughts on that? The reason I need input on this is my last Palm device was a Vx which lasted nearly 10 years so I'm a little out of the Palm'loop ;)

I thought it was determined that the T3 could use a 2GB SD card with PalmPowerups; but NOT a 4GB card?

I'd search the forums a bit more carefully first. This issue has been hashed out before, and pretty recently.

I have several 4GB SD (not SDHC) cards; but I think someone once said that didn't work for the T3. Again, I'm just going off recall. If someone is really interested, try to search the forums or take a chance.

In the post at 1src forums there was some success. Only certain 4gig sd only cards worked and they had to have the correct fat 32 driver. For it to even work several things need to be done in a specific way. It is complicated. Only a few people accomplished having it work with a 4gig card. The driver needs to be added to a memory card and copied into ram. This was a problem and some people did it with resco explorer and some did it with one of the palm powerups programs called UDMH. Either program can be used in trial mode and erased when the driver is up and running. If someone is really serious about making this free software work on there t3 than they should read the 1src forum postings for the t3 big cards and research the proper way to install it and the same for the fat 32 driver that was patched for this purpose. As with anything you should read the directions to decide weather it is something you really want or need. 2gig is still much better than 1gig and it is free software. I remember all the posts on the 4gig cards for the TX before Dimitry wrote the sdhc driver. That was a real pain in my opinion.

Actually, it wasn't such a pain with the TX. It either worked or it didn't. :) Here on BH we were able to identify a particular make and model of Transcent 4gb SD card that almost always worked. You had to be careful because there were other Transcend 4Gb cards that didn't. However, it required nothing special-- no fat 32 driver needed, the TX already had it, I believe. My Transcend card worked wonderfully until I finally got PowerSDHC so I could use a 16Gb card.
