Reminds me of when we went through the peanut butter toast thing some years back and I was a warranty center for some VCRs. Take the top off. At the least, there will be 2 screws on each side (may be on the bottom), then carefully slide it back and remove it. You will then be able to see if it "ate" the tape or if it is just jambed. The MOST common cause of this is people that keep pushing in on the tape as the auto loading starts to work. This gets the "basket" gears out of time. You should see a large white gear on the right front of the side of the basket.
Try to turn it, both ways, and see if it frees things up. Next, turn the power back on and if it does not eject on it's own, try turning the gear again. It may even make a noise as the gears attempt to realign, but it should spit out the tape. If that doesn't work, the basket assembly can be removed and the tape taken out that way. IF the tape was still loaded during all this I would recommend cleaning the heads before using it again.
If you were in my area, any one of my techs would do this for you, for our $15.00 minium bench charge.
