Before doing any maintenance on a motorcycle, you really should have a service manual for it.
A Clymer manual will only cost you about $23 + shipping.
It will have step by step instructions on how to correctly perform any maintenance task, including removing the fuel tank.
A service manual can pay for itself the first time you use it. You will know how to correctly do any repair on your bike. There will be less chance of breaking something because it was incorrectly disassembled.
You will know maintenance items that aren't obvious. On my bike for example, there is an oil sump pickup screen that should be cleaned every other oil change. Without my service manual, I wouldn't have known there was access to this screen, and how easy it is to service it, so it would have been ignored.
You will also know by reading the maintenance procedures ahead of time which maintenance items are within your abilities and which ones you may want done by a professional mechanic.
