How do I get a free cellphone from sprint?

I broke my phone.I have another rumor but apparently that is broken also.I went to the sprint store but they said I have to pay 100$ for a refurbished phone.My buddy said that he was able to get a free phone by talking to retentions but I don't know how to go about that.I know it is possible I just don't know what to say.
