How do I garden on Sims 3?

I bought a watering can, fertilizer, and seeds. But I have no idea how to plant them and grow them! How do I garden? I tried going to my inventory and clicking on the seeds watering can and fertilizer but it doesnt do anything. I also tried going outside in my yard and that doesnt work either. help!
