I decided that i need to train my horse, Patrick, to free lounge this saturday. I think its important for him to know for later years to come, but the last time i tried he wouldn't move, even when i tapped him with the whip. He likes to socialize and will immediately walk towards me as soon as i let him off the lounge line. How do I start to get him to free lounge?
He does know word commands, he's just smart and understands that he's cute and can get away with some things, not that i let him most of the time but i have never seriously tried free lounging him before!

I'm not sure if your trying this in a round pen, but that's the first thing you need. Second, he sounds pretty smart in that he has figured out when he walks into you he no longer has to work. I taught my horse just by keeping the whip behind him (as his guide) to motivate him forward. (I'm not sure if Patrick is lazy or not) When he would walk in toward me, I would step to the side that is closest to his hindquarters and urge him on with the lounge whip. They eventually get the idea and follow the round pen. When you are done, let off the whip motivation and relax, they will begin to recognize this as a sign to stop. Eventually, even the slightest change in your body movement he will recognize as a sign of something.
There are many natural horsemanship DVD's that follow this type of horsey psychology. They implement different games and fun stuff. They can explain it in much better detail.

I would suggest that you do some lunging first, then take him off the lunge line,

if he tries to come into you, give him a firm push with your body,

again if he decides he wants to come in off the circle, point the whip at his shoulder (don't use it on his shoulder tho).

hope this helps

i would let him know that you are in control. put him on the lunge line until he is comfortable then reward him. after a while he should figure out that he should do as he is told and listen and then let him off the lunge line. make sure that you reward him afterwards for doing a good job.
