my 1998 Dodge Ram has started making a whining/whirring noise from the rearend recently. A mechanic who lives near me heard me drive by and told me it sounds to him like a bearing is going bad. If I am very mechanically inclined and have a good selection of shadetree mechanic tools, how hard/easy/impossible would it be for me to fix this problem myself? And what would I do to fix it for the least amount of money?

Fix it yourself & she'll be brand new for about $350 with quality parts. A used complete rearend is $250 - $350 from a junkyard.

With it being a 98 model I would bet that if the bearing is bad, the ring and pinion are too, when it runs out of alignment, it wears them out. I would let a shop do it unless you have a friend that could walk you through it. You might find a lower mileage one at a salvage to just swap it out.
