How do I fix my Yamaha Moto 4 Atv?

I got a 1990 Yamaha Moto 4 250.The bar that attaches to the Hi/Lo/Reverse gear shifter is popped off.It happened a few times before.I am thinking that the ball that it is suppose to be put over is wore.And it is extremely hard to get on.Do I need a new bar or ball or can it be fixed?
