How do I fix my photoshop so that my text will appear in colour and not grey scale?

I just got photoshop and I'm trying to change the text colour front grey to red. I can view the colours when I view them, but once I select them it will appear grey in the box and on the actual image. How do I fix this?
I'm pretty new to photoshop so I need really step by step instructions. Thanks.
 
Somewhere up in your pallette settings you will have "greyscale" checked, uncheck it.

If you cant find it, just select all -> copy.

Then click on 'new' image so it opens up a new blank page.
And paste it in there. You should be able to change colours.
