How do I find the right memory upgrade for my pc?

I have dell 8400, which came with only 512mb/4GBmax (PC4200, DDR SDRAM). I would like to expand it to 1.5GB.

can i insert a single 1GB stick or 2x512mb?
if i can insert a single 1GB stick, which slot can insert(i have 4 slot)
any different if i upgrade to PC5300 DDR SDRAM?
