How do I find previous owners/history of an old home?

My friend and I went to another friend's house to play with a ouija board. Long story short, we want to find out the house's past residents that date as far back as the mid-1800s.

How should we go about accessing this information? Courthouse? Library? How would we utilize the Internet?

Acquired at a title company,ask for chain of title for that address.
Used to be free and may cost now ,not sure.
