How do I find out movie release dates?

And I mean PAST movie release dates, preferably for both the US and UK.

I'm doing a retro feature on my blog and I've been struggling to pin down the films that would have been in cinemas at any particular point in time.

TV, news and music is relatively simple to pin down

I think my film blackspot rather shows in the one I did this week, which is completely vague:

Is there a website I can go to for some kind of database? Using Wikipedia and imdb was very patchy, so no need to suggest them.

IMDB usually have this information. As I have used it to figure out what films were released the week I was born.

I found it patchy for the 1972 ones.

Had to go first through the wikipedia list of 1972 films (which was flawed anyway - many weren't released until 1973 or even 1974) then check the film's individual entry to take me to the individual entry on imdb. Sometimes it gave exact dates for the US and UK releases but sometimes it just gave West Germany or something strange.

Then perhaps try googling the films you want to know about but make sure to include release date as part of your search.

Yeah, but my search is the other way round really.

I'm not looking for particular films.
