How do I find out a house' history before buying it?

We represent the buyer and/or seller, we do not represent the house. There are inspections that can be done to make sure the house is safe. Every 911 has a business line, call and ask you neighborhood questions there. Ever pick up a paper, go on a local news site? Those might be of assistance as well.
 
I'm a first time home buyer and I want to make sure that the house i'm gonna be living is safe and also how do I find out about the neighborhood. Coz i'm sure the realtors will not tell me anything bad about the house.
