How do I figure out my images mega pixel count?

You have to divide the 1,228,800 by 1,000,000 to get mega anything, pixels, meters, kilos, whatever. In this case you have a total of 1.2 megapixels
 
I read that you multiply the width by height, but each answer has #'s ranging from the hundreds to thousands. Yet I always hear about a single # such as 3 or 4 mega pixels. How is this determined?

Example: my photo is 1280x960. If I multiply this I get 1228800. So how many mega pixels is this? Because I'm pretty sure that it's not 1,228,800 mega pixels. Just a bit confused. Any help would be great. Thanks
