How do I enroll in a distance learning program?

I live in California and I am currently attending a public school, however I am very independent and feel that distance learning will suit me best. I don't know how to do this though. What are the steps I have to follow in order to successfully become a student in a distance learning school like the American school of correspondence? Do I have to have my parents withdraw me from my public school and enroll me into American school of correspondence? Is distance learning possible in California? Is enrolling into a distance learning school the same as transferring from one school to another? How will I go about enrolling into a distance learning program legally? Oh and will American school of correspondence follow the compulsory school attendance requirements of California? Please, if you have any experience with distance learning or the American school of correspondence please, please, please answer!
