How do I engage the 4x4 on my jeep...?

I twist the thingys on the rims and shift the lever...is that it? Someone told me I have to go backwards a few feet to engage or disengage the 4x4 after shifting to 2wd and turning back the things on the rims...help...
 
reversing is only to make sure you are no longer in 4 wheel drive. To engage, simply shift the lever and twist the "thingys" on the rims. Maybe you should read up on your owners manual (just a suggestion)
 
That is how you engage 4 wheel drive. When you want to put it back into 2 wheel drive, reversing after you shifted will ensure the hubs disengage.
