How do I eliminate Chat/Mobile text?

I do not want to sign out or change my status- I want to stop chat/mobile text from loading alltogether. Since they involuntarily added this to my Yahoo classic mailbox my browser crashes taking all my other pages with it. If I have my gmail page open it alone doesn't crash. I'm not a techie so walk me through this step-by-step. Running XP Home and IE7 but will switch to Firefox to get rid of the problem if necessary.
 
OK listen. If in the chat section of Yahoo! Mail you choose Sign Out this will disable that feature. All you will see in that blue box on the left is "Chat & Mobile Text" and under it "I am Offline." Thus chat has not loaded and none of your contacts will show there. It only loads if you manually change that using the drop down menu to Available, Busy, or Invisible. There is no way to remove the blue box completely in any browser.
