I'm a 16 year old male swimmer with a 29.30/1:06.02 in 50/100 fly. I'd like to know how I can train my butterfly sprints without killing myself in practice. Usually we don't do more than 1km FLY in practice and it's mostly either in IM or a 100/200, but part of a pretty hard series. The thing is, I don't have the same technique in my sprints as in my 200. In practice though, my muscles wear out and I can't do my sprint technique. Therefore, I'm left breathing every stroke and kicking badly. Is there any way I can practice the sprint technique without actually sprinting, or at least not as fast as usual? On a side note, I'm looking forward to trying out breathing every stroke like Phelps, are there any tips I can get for doing this without harming my speed?
