how do i edit a batch file while in the command line?

I'm running windows 7, I want to edit a batch file, not run it, while in the command line.
I've tried edit filename.ext [ the filename is hmwk5.bat, thats what I attempted. edit hmwk5.bat] and it tells me:
'edit' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
