How Do I Disable Data Usage?

In an effort to save battery life, I some times would like to turn off data usage on my phone. I have a Droid X but I'm not sure if that really matters. I downloaded two widgets from Curve Fish which I thought would help. One is an APN toggle to turn it on or off and the other is a 2G/3G switch. I have used both these widgets but it appears that I still transferring data. Am I doing something wrong? Are there other apps out there that's does this easier?

The other thing I did was dial *#*#INFO#*#*on my phone to gain access to my signal choices. From there I can choose how to handle my signal but I'm not sure if it'll work. Thanks for any input!

In further looking into this, I think my toggles for turn off data doesn't work because my Droid X has been upgraded to Gingerbread. It appears that I have to go to *#*#INFO#*#* in order to turn off data. Are there any widget shortcuts that work on Gingerbread for this? I read a quite a few apps and many are saying there is not support for Gingerbread yet. Thanks for any feedback!

i just go in settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > select network & choose 2g, 3g or automatic.

i know it's not ideal (about 6 taps), but until the widgets catch up....

I saw that in the Marketplace but there's a premium and free version. Which are you using? I'd like to use the free one. Is that any good?
