How do I create electronic dance music?

I am a fan of dance/trance music (especially Tiesto and Armin van Buuren's) and I am wondering how I would go about making some of my own? I've seen that most of the 'good' djs use mixing desks to make/edit their music, I don't think I'll be able to afford one of those yet, so what is a good alternative? Computer programs? I have heard that Fruity Loops and Acid 5.0 are good, but I'm wondering are they actually THAT great, what are their good points, limitations and difficulty to use?
