How do I correctly operate the choke on my 2000 Honda Shadow VT750 ACE?

I feel like a total moron asking this question, but it is my first bike and I am a little confused. If I pull the choke lever out, the bike idles slower and is somewhat choppy. When I push the choke in, it idles fine. I thought pulling the choke out meant you were giving it choke, I am just a little confused as to why pulling the choke would make my bike run choppier. I dont want to ride with the choke on and screw my bike up, i want to make sure that when the choke lever is pushed all the way in the choke is off, and not vice versa. Thanks in advance
Thanks alot guys, I appreciate it. sorry for being such a newbie!

The Choke is only to be on briefly for cold starting then completely off. The choppy running is caused by the choke being on and not needed. The Choke is used to temporarily cause the engine to suck extra fuel for starting when cold and when the engine heats up a little, which doesn't take long, it can no longer handle all the extra fuel.

When you pull the lever, you are indeed giving the engine choke. However there is such a thing as too much choke. This is why your engine runs choppy. As long as the engine runs well, leave the choke off. My brother has had 2 shadows (an '86 700 and a '96 1100) and I don't think I ever saw him touch the chokes. As long as it holds an idle and will take some throttle without sputtering, your mix is good. Ride on and enjoy.
