How do I cook a hard boiled egg?

An easy cooking question this time! Following a suggestion from a co-worker, they said to put the eggs in a pan with cold water (covering the entire egg with an extra inch of water on top), bring just to a boil, take the pan off the stove, let the eggs sit for 20 minutes, run cold water over them, wait another minute, then peel - and that is that!

Does that sound right? I should point out that I only hard boil one or two eggs at a time (for egg salad). Thanks!

1. Place eggs in a large saucepan. Cover them with cool water by 1 inch. Slowly bring water to a boil over medium heat; when the water has reached a boil, cover and remove from heat. Let sit 12 minutes.
2. Transfer eggs to a colander; place under cool running water to stop the cooking. Eggs can be peeled and served immediately. Remaining eggs, with shells on, may be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

These are Martha Stewart's instructions and I found that the 12 min. thing is important and have heard it from other TV chefs.

agnostic1015 is right, I however let mine sit in the covered pot for 15 minutes, remove lid, then drain and submerge the eggs in a bowl of ice water.
Remember, eggs at least a week old will peel easier.
This method gives you easy to peel, no yucky green ring in the yolk...perfect eggs every time

I don't turn off the heat. I put them in water, bring it to a boil, and let it boil for 15 minutes, take it off, put the pan in the sink and run cold water in it and dump some ice in it. I'm not saying it won't work your way, just that I've never done it that way. I would be concerned that they don't cook through all the way, but you can try it and if they are cooked through, then that's cool.
