How do I connect my external stereo to my XBOX 360/TV?

I have a Sony stereo and the audio input/output jack. I am trying to connect it to my television so that I can hear my XBOX 360 through the stereos speakers, but no sound seems to be coming out. Please try to help me attempt to get sound out of the stereos speakers!! (I have a 32 in. VIZIO Plasma screen television).
