How do I completely disable chat in my email page?

I only want yahoo messenger for when I want to chat. I do not want the chat feature in my email account at all. It never fails, when I sign into my email account, someone see's me come on and starts to chat before I can sign off. I want to get rid of it totally so I can email in peace and not have to mess with that chat feature at all! How do I do this?
