How do I choose which colors to use when fishing?

I fish for bass, generally I use colors randomly. I have no idea how to select them. Which colors are best for murky water? Clear? In the night? Depth? Then, how would I narrow down certain group of similar colors when there is a certain amount of light? Thanks! =D

I find red works best for me, but it depends on the bait fish in that area
