Recently, my car has been making this puttering sound (a few mechanics have called it pinging) whenever I accelerate from the top of second gear (it's a manual transmission) to the middle of fourth. It's concerning me quite a bit.
I talked to a mechanic friend about it and he said he thought it was something in the exhaust, probably damaged or broken exhaust manifold gaskets.
So, basically, I'm somewhat car retarded but I can follow a diagram and instructions pretty damn well. I need to know if it's possible for me to check the status of my exhaust manifold gaskets and, if they're damaged, replace them myself with some regular tools (wrenches, screw drivers, hammers, etc. just not complicated mechanic gear).
I would greatly appreciate detailed answers or, at the very least, a link to something very detailed.
Thank you,
Nate
