How do I change channels using my VCR as a cable tuner?

I accidentally pulled the knob that hooks up to cable off of the back of my TV and was using a cable box through the RCAs but now I have no cable box. I only have the basic cable wire so I am trying to use a VCR to hook up to RCAs but when I do this I can't change channels on the TV because it has to be on input for using the RCAs. How do I accomplish this?
