How do I cancel a court date?

I would like to cancel or postpone a child support case that I filed for with the option of being able to file again. I live in New Jersey.

Can I call? Do I have to go down and fill out more paper work?

and if you can kindly answer my first question I would like to know how much notice I should give them?

Thank you.

Different courts and different kinds of proceedings have different processes, and I couldn't even begin to guess. It may be necessary to bring a motion to adjourn, or you might just be able to make a call or write a letter and get an administrative adjournment, depending on the circumstances. Or it may not even be possible. Who knows.

However, in my experience, court staff are generally pretty helpful when you call them up with procedural questions. If you're polite, and you catch them on a good day. (Well, come to think of it, I suppose it is kind of hit and miss.)

In other words, calling them to ask how to seek an adjournment is a good idea.
