how do i brighten the screen on a nokia 8800?

I have just bought a nokia 8800 and it is really dark to the point where i have to stand in the window and tilt the phone right down to see it faintly.. does anyone know how to brighten the screen?
i have looked in all the settings and cant find it, so please dont say 'it should be in the settings on display'

or have i just been sold one, that is broke?
