How do I become an author?

You write a book. Then you get an agent, who sends it to a publisher, and if they like it, they publish it, then people buy it, and--there you go.

That was a VERY simplified answer for you.
 
First you need an understanding spouse with a good job. Second you seal yourself away and write a book, third you find a man or a woman who will not return your phone calls and take 20 percent of what you make this is called an agent. Then your agent will find someone who will print and sell your book, screw with your money, editors who will make changes and not tell you this is called a publisher. Then you seal your self away and write another book and do whole thing over again, god willing your first book will sell better than the first if not your screwed.
