How do I become a better poet?

I feel that I am unable to express myself and I hate it, whenever I write something (a poem or not) I feel inferior. Please give me some tips and guidance about picking up my pencils and writing.
I also feel "silly" when writing poetry, how do I overcome this?

Read books.
Listen to music.
Words will come to you like that.
-snaps fingers-
lmfao.

Traffic cop: "Practice, practice, practice"

Poetry is like learning a foreign language. Once you get a feel for it, it seems like you could always do it and it seems natural So don't feel bad if you feel inferior or silly now, because there are MILLIONS of other people who feel that way about their ability with poetry.

Read more poetry. Find a style you like. Not everyone likes rhyming, not everyone likes freeform. Then there's rap, which I always think has a C missing off the front, but others love. Your style, when you find it, will come more easily to you than anything else.

Pick a subject that comes from the heart, rather than the mind. A good poem comes from a hole in your heart, and when others read it they either feel a similar hole in their heart, or relate to your bleeding.

But it's a language, or even music. The more you sing it or hum it and write it, the better you will be.

If you feel silly, don't share your early poems. Save those just for you, so you can see how you've improved.

When you get more experience, learn about meter and rhythm and syllable counts, etc. Buy a rhyming dictionary to easily finding words with the right rhyme. You can use the rhythm and syllables of a word or words to imitate the sound of a galloping horse.

Just start. Anywhere. The rest comes with practice.

you just gotta pour your heart out on the paper.. it doesnt matter if others dont like your poem..if you like it, thats all that matters. and if you dont like your poem, you can always change it. in order to get over your writers block, just jot down whatever your feeling at the moment and try to make it rhyme if you want, but if u dont want to, u dont have to.

just write!

The first thing about poetry is to know it is felt more than thought. What I mean by that is this.
You are feeling. Your emotions are busting through your skin. You have an urgency to write what you feel.
You go to the table and blip....how do I start?
Okay just write everything. Later you can go back and separate your sentences and rhyme or not.
The important things are feeling first, thinking second.
Try to live inside the poem you are writing. Lets say you want to write about a view of the ocean that is just powerful to you.
How does the ocean feel in your senses? What is the magnitude of that power?
Example:
The waves roar and my voice is silenced
Azure waters capped with alabaster foam
Crash and clamor with destiny sequenced
The rhythm like a heart beat, bring it home

I watch in awe of such power of God's will
The pageant goes on for millions of years
I am a dot in a moment to moment until
A million moments later the sand clears.

Okay enough writing from me. But I had to live there (at the ocean) inside my emotions, while I wrote this just now. That is what I mean.
Make sure your words flow.
Its not a good poem when one sentence has five more words than another. Do not rhyme just to rhyme!!!! So many poets start out doing that and it is evident someone says to themselves I need to rhyme with joy so I will call my 90 year old uncle a boy on the next line.

Try not to sound like a Hallmark card. Many new poets do that with a love you poem. Well that's my best advise. I hope it is helpful. Best to you, its possible you have a gift inside, but you need to unwrap it!!!

"Nor is there singing school but studying / Monuments of its own magnificence..." read the great poets, study the works of the masters, and learn.... oh, and write, yes write...
