How do I attach rank insignia onto the flash of the beret?

Ultra noob question here,

I am having a hard time pinning my rank onto my flash of my beret. The pin only reaches so far back when i put it in and it doesn't clip. Am I doing something wrong?

Also this question is misc but I went ahead and cut the two edges off the backside of the flash that makes it stiff because it doesn't crease right when you put it on your head. This is the right thing to do, correct? Maybe some of you squared away NCOs can help me. No one ever showed.

*Blinks* Better ask your stick sgt, or one of the other soldiers- out of all the problems I had as a Drill Sgt and Signal Soldier, and Motor Pool Mechanic- I've never encountered this problem.

Push the pins through all the way and bend the pins with something hard. Don't try to put the clasps on.
