How Do I Add A Photoshop layer?

So I have done the Layer>New> Layer thing and now have a layer with a grey and white checkerboard blank layer. how do I actually add a picture to that layer?
 
Treat each layer as its own separate 'canvas', or film. Imagine each layer as a transparent page for you to edit, and multiple layers allow you to edit one of these transparent pages without touching any of the others. The simplest way to insert a picture is copying and pasting it in.
 
Just drag and drop the picture to that Layer or just copy and paste it. This will automatically create a separate layer to the existing layer. Try it.
