how do computers, flash drives, and external hard drives get viruses?

all of my stuff seems to get viruses and i really have no clue how it happens. for example, i just bought an external hard drive and when i plugged it into my classmates computer, it detected a virus. its brand new, and i only used it on my computer. does that mean it came from computer? how did my computer get a virus in the first place?
