How do a do a military bun fast but 'sturdy'?

I have recently joined the Civil Air Patrol and need to do a military style bun and have only been able to find info on doing a sock bun, but i do not like taht way very much, i know that others have found better ways that are fast and easy, i also will need to know this for when i am in the real military later on, i have fairly long hair, it goes down to about the middle of my back
